Spain was just ranked #1 in the world for digital nomad visas in 2026 — ahead of Malta and Portugal — in a global comparison of 51 countries. Portugal held the top spot for years before that. Both countries now have dedicated digital nomad visas, clear paths to permanent residency, and enough sunshine and seafood to make almost anyone reconsider their lease back home.

But the differences between them are real, and they matter. Visa income thresholds have moved in different directions. Portugal’s famous tax breaks for newcomers are mostly gone. Spain’s Beckham Law — a legitimate 24% flat tax for qualifying remote workers — has just gotten more accessible for digital nomad visa holders. Lisbon rents have surged past Madrid’s.
